Weekend in Saldanha Bay

As summer comes to an end, we decided to explore the beautiful sea side village of Saldanha Bay. A scenic 1.5 hour drive out of Cape Town means that you are far enough out of the hustle and bustle, but close enough to escape to the beach for a weekend of fun in the sun.

A very popular fishing town means that the waters of Saldanha are full of rigs, fishing trawlers and recreational boats that stretch as far as the eye can see. The crystal blue waters and unspoiled beaches is the perfect backdrop to enjoy a gorgeous gift drop I received from Chef Mynhardt. A Cape Town based Food Stylist, Chef and fellow foodie.

Weekends are about family and loved ones and thats exactly what this weekend was. So what better place than to open up our picnic basket filled with delicious foodie goodies to enjoy with a view like this one.

Gorgeously ripe figs from XTN Family farm made for a perfectly sweet treat as we opened the woven picnic basket. On the 1st and 2nd of April 2017, you can visit the XTN Family farm and be a part of the fun as it is the 3rd annual XTN Fig Festival which promises to be the best yet. With an exciting array of fresh produce and preserves, peppered fig boerewors, cheddar and fig pork sausage…YUMMM, the official XTN Fig Beer, fig juice and if all goes well even a brand new fig cider will all be on offer for you to enjoy. The kids can play and have their faces painted while chatting to some of the farm animals. Soothing sounds will flow from the likes of Chris Rain, Gerry Liberty, Oh Jack, Newton & Co, TWEE and Bottomless Coffee. You can visit their website http://xtnfamily.co.za/#fig_festival or book on Computicket.

As the sun began to move along the beach creating shadows against the drift wood, we set up to enjoy our picnic.

The deboned lamb rib was specifically sourced from Karusaf, a division of Williston Abattoir and a proud advocate on Karoo certification.  This local sourced meat is ethically reared and responsibly packaged to ensure the top quality of meat. Karusaf is the deboning facility that packaged the perfectly manicured piece of lamb for this picnic. You can read more about Karusaf

We rolled the deboned lamb, secured it with skewers, seasoned it and placed it in the oven for 20 minutes before finishing it off on the braai…wow!!! Before serving, take the skewers out and slice into rounds. The rolled lamb and figs were complimentary and a glass of the Cape Tawney from KWV just sealed the deal.

Very few meals in my house can be left without being finished off with a cheese board and Simonsberg definitely made that possible. With the tag line, masters of cheese, I felt in very safe hands having grown up with the brand. I am a lover of Camembert, Brie…blue…mature…okay any cheese is a winner in my book, however I had not tried the Cambrieni,so I was very excited when I saw it in my basket.

Unique to the Simonsberg area this is the perfect party size cheese, at a whopping 500g…no one will be left having not been able to tried it. You can visit their website for more information; http://www.simonsbergcheeselovers.com/index.html

A Saturday afternoon on the West coast had all of the food boxes ticked, of course the complimenting factor wouldn’t be missing…KWV thought it too cruel to choose just one of their amazing sweeter products and thought that life is far too short to have to choose, so instead KWV added both the Noble Late Harvest 2013 as well as the Cape tawny Dessert Wine to this picnic basket of delights.

Both complimented the cheese, figs and lamb which is very rare in a dessert wine product as it can often be unbearably sweet, which was definitely not the case here.

Cheers to a weekend of a family fun get away on the beaches of Saldanha Bay where the food and wine flowed almost as quickly as the tide came in. If you try any of these amazing products or want to lt me know how it was for you, do email me on megandanielsfood@gmail.com

Once again, Happy Eating!
