Lighting Fires in the industry – Firefish Restaurant

We are spoilt for choice when it comes to the selection of seafood in our oceans along the South African coast. Bountiful waters and an empty mussel shell’s toss into the shallow waters, means you can be seconds away from the freshest meal of a lifetime.

With the hustle and bustle of tourist season looming Cape Townians are venturing away from heavy red meat dishes and rather opting for deliciously light seafood from our vast oceans surrounding our gorgeous coast line.

A brand new Hot Spot to enjoy the incredible bounty of what our oceans have to offer has opened along the tourist run way at the V&A Waterfront affectionately named Firefish.

Firefish opened in September 2017 and has quickly processed up the ladder of seafood success along some of the best names at the V&A Waterfront. It’s simple yet classic interior is the common thread in the Kove Collection and you can quickly see why it has begun to run miles ahead of it’s sister restaurants in the collection.

A touch of sophisticated glamour around the frosty ice bar where diners get the opportunity to pick their seafood. From crab claws to langoustines, this is truly a modern diners seafood munger.

The outside seating area keeps with the summer look of a day well spent in the Cape Town sea breeze, while the interior adds a touch of worldliness and experience to a tourists freshly sun kissed glow as you dine and enjoy some of the Chefs favourite menu items.

Locally caught fresh fish line the glass of the ice bar while bright rosette coloured langoustines pile up, a plethora of prawns cascade on the crushed ice and a tank of oysters await to be shucked and plated on the gorgeous gold platters for you to enjoy.

If grilled seafood in butter and champagne isn’t your idea of complete heaven (not sure why it wouldn’t be) then the sushi bar will definitely have your seafood cravings covered. Unblemished, bright and firm whole Salmon and Tuna are carved up to order at the sushi counter and await to be accompanied with some of its best friends; ripe avocado, crunchy sesame seeds, crisp seaweed sheets and eye watering wasabi in some of the restaurants spectacular signature dish range.

Cocktails need very little introduction and Firefish puts a lot of flair and thought into each of their signature cocktails. Their menu is filled with a selection of classics with a spin and my favourite was definitely the Strawberry and Lime Gin and Tonic.

A huge part of a dining experience is the hospitality received and it can literally make or break a meal. It is sometimes the difference between a cleared plate enjoyed by a frequent diner and a pile of dishes sent back and a remark or two on Trip Advisor, with these smiling faces beaming with laughter, who could have a terrible meal. The staff are incredibly attentive and look after your every need.

As the warmer weather blows over Cape Town we decided to sit outside and enjoy our view of Table Mountain, the scurry around the harbour and foreign languages surrounding us in this tourist run way strip along the ocean. This is the golden mile of the V&A Waterfront and Firefish has definitely urned its spot.

The Bread and Butter Course

After browsing through the menu, I was pleasantly surprised that there was something for everyone. Head Chef Amber Deetlefs, has infused the menu with flavours of her travels. She was based in Asia for almost 5 years and you can taste the culinary cultures marinating together.

Our drinks arrived moments after ordering them and we raised our glasses to cheers to what promised to be a fantastic meal…it really didn’t disappoint.

Our starter selection was the perfect Asian fusion we were craving. A modern take on sushi packed with copious amounts of flavour and fresh ingredients eased our palates into the incredible tastes of two of the unusual dishes on the starter menu – White bait and Beef  Tataki Tartar.

The white bait was not only cooked to absolute perfection, it was seasoned with intention. A punchy spicy light batter coated the fish and perfectly paired with the aioli while the classic Beef tartar was transformed by the Tataki style of innovative seasoning.

Kove Collection wines have a well balanced flavour too them that allows you to pair the classics off their menu with their house labels. We opted for the buttery Kove Collection Chardonnay that paired incredibly well with the feast that was about to come as our main course.

Innovative hand towels to freshen up between courses

Our main course was absolutely outstanding. Fish is a hard thing to get right and a moment too long on the grill or coals can be the difference between flaky and opaque fish and charred and overcooked cardboard.

Firefish absolutely nailed it! We satisfyingly tucked into the flawlessly prepared Pan Fried Seabass in a Champagne, Yuzu Miso sauce with pickled ginger and crispy lotus root. An absolutely outstanding dish merging unusual ingredients.

The grilled Tiger Prawns in a Kombu Butter is served in a portion of five large perfectly cooked prawns that I paired with miso fries…YUM!!!

All the main menu items can be interchanged with your choice of side with an extra charge. Sesame Green beans and Ginger sticky rice finished off the composition of these dishes and complimented our proteins so well.

Believe it or not there was space for dessert. You would honestly leave your meal at Firefish sad if you don’t manage to make it to the third and final magical course.

Keeping with the Asian fusion, I opted for the matcha cream. Very similar to a Panna Cotta, with sesame wafers, strawberries and a chocolate oat crumble.

A chocolate lovers dream comes in the form of a chocolate Macaron Pie served with a raspberry cream and strawberry coulis. Absolute heaven!

Firefish is definitely flying above the rest and will soon be taking the lead when it comes to perfectly cooked and seasoned seafood with an Asian flair. This is definitely the star of the Kove Collection. You can read about the other sister restaurants that I have visited recently by clicking on the below articles.
