Jamie Oliver Italian in London

On Wednesday the 9th of February I arrived in wintery London, after two long hall flights, a stop in over in Dubai and a two hour time difference that isn’t enough for me to complain of jet lag but all I could think about was a steaming hot shower and a good 10 hours sleep to recuperate. That was exactly what was needed.

On Thursday the 10th of February at 11am we were posing under Big Ben dressed like Jelly Babies with five layers bundling us up for the 2C day ahead.

The weather was definitely not going to stop us from boarding the City Cruising river boat and taking the obligatory 1.5 Hour meander down the river thames, now I feel like I am in London again.

We get off the river cruise and it was my mission to eat my way through London so what better way to start this month long culinary adventure than at Jamie Oliver Italian in the heart of Greenwich, its blue understated door did not prepare me for what was to come.

Walking in at the entrance, the Italian features with exposed brick walls, touches of city living metals and cozy seating makes this the perfect place to pop in for a quick work meeting, a girls lunch or treating you and a loved one to a well priced two or three course lunch or dinner.

The fast paced lifestyle of London definitely lends itself to gorgeous elegance of a restaurant like this as well as the famous name behind it.

The front of the restaurant is perfect for the in and out lunch meetings, with cozy booths and an easy area opposite the bar. If you follow along the corridor you walk out into a greenhouse type structure with fun interior details and the open style kitchen allows you to watch the chefs whip up your dish while you sip on one of their amazing cocktails.

The menu is really fun and playful, I don’t think I expected anything less of Jamie Oliver. He has partnered up with one of his mentors and Italian great, Gennaro Contaldo and founded Jamie Oliver Italian in 2008. Today it has expanded to 60 restaurants worldwide and with such a gorgeous menu I can see why!

The menu is a mix of Italian classics with a typically Jamie Oliver twist. The food is fresh, flavourful and inspired. We had to opt for the affordable two course lunch time special for 11.95 Pounds. I knew I would just be so mesmerised with the menu, I had to look at the drinks menu first which I knew would be an easier choice than looking through all the delicious options.

The drinks and wine list is quite extensive and boasts amazing wines from different parts of the world. This allows you to find a perfect paring for almost anything on the menu.

So after receiving a chilled glass of wine I was very excited to begin the process of looking through and picking something from the menu. Uhh….this was going to be hard.

After much deliberation and back and forth I decided to follow to the well known saying “you only live once” and have a double set of pasta as we were sitting in Jamie Oliver ITALIAN and I saw the chefs hand making the pasta as we entered past the kitchen.

We opted for the following menu and IT WAS INCREDIBLE!

Fritto Misto: Crispy fried sustainable fish & squid tossed in fennel-spiced flour with garlic & lemon aioli

Truffle Tagliattele: Our famous handmade pasta served in a luxurious, silky black truffle butter with aged Parmesan, nutmeg & more shaved black truffle

Italian Steak and Chips: Marinated skirt steak, flash grilled & served with garlic butter, aged Parmesan, slaw & fries

Oxtail Tagliattele: Our freshly made pasta with a slow-cooked oxtail & Chianti ragù, topped with aged Parmesan & crispy rosemary

I don’t know how many things are better than pasta in this life but this comes pretty close! The sauce was rich and meaty with the perfect amount of herbs and freshly ground black pepper. The skirt steak was perfectly cooked medium rare and the chips had a special Gennaro spicy secret to it. Full of flavour, it was amazing!

I would definitely recommend popping in if you find yourself in the Greenwich area or of course one of he other worldwide branches. The passion definitely flows from Jamie and Gennaro’s initial idea to the chefs cooking each component of the dish to the waitresses serving and the final plate that arrives at your table in no time at all.
