There are two commonly used routes to get from Cape Town to Hermanus. The first is up Sir Lowry’s pass through the breathtaking Elgin valley (home of cool climate wines and the finest produce) and the second is a small town sea lover’s dream along the coast. We usually do one route and then the second on the way home.
Fick restaurant opened just a few months before the pandemic hit in 2020. The restaurant was dreamt up by Dutchies owners Joke, Daan & Just Gonggrijp. Built into the natural rock formations and perched up above the Ficks tidal pool, this is a restaurant like no other. These beach restaurants are very hard to come by in South Africa. With out strict laws on beach dining, however this restaurant is modelled after so many of the beautiful Bali restaurants perched into the rocks as if they have always been there.
The linear restaurant offers so many different seating areas. Which means no matter where you sit it feels private and special. This is great for outdoor socially distanced dining during this new climate we find ourselves in. Ficks offers a pinchos menu. This means that the restaurant offers a range of small sized meals inspired by the Nothern Spanish style of eating and entertaining. These flavour filled small plates are prepared by Chef Fadzi and Sous Chef Susan who’s passion, creativity and love of seasonal produce is showcased in every bite.
The size of these dishes encourages the ordering of a variety of plates and sharing them between your friends and family.
The menu boasts flavour filled thought through dishes and we enjoyed the crispy calamari, their unique take on the classic patata’s bravas, as well as their flash fried cauliflower (probably my favourite.)
The best thing about dining in Hermanus is that often the restaurants are pet friendly. This town loves dining with their furry best friends and Ficks is no different. Nessie (our Scottish Terrier) was fussed over by the Manager on duty and was given her very own water bowl and house made peanut butter doggy biscuits. She also really enjoyed people watching and if it wasn’t for her leash, she would of been doing laps in the rock pool down below.
I have put together a look book for my outfit of the day which you can re-create and shop. Just some inspiration for a causal yet chic road trip outfit of the day.
Ficks is a truly wonderful restaurant, the atmosphere was wonderful and I truly felt like I was sitting on a beach in Bali again. The staff were friendly and the food was mouth-wateringly delicious. A true gem of Hermanus.
