Diving into Den Anker

Den Anker is as much a V&A Waterfront landmark as some of the rusted ships which bob alongside it in the harbour. This Belgian restaurant first opened it’s doors in 1994 and surprisingly hasn’t rusted at the seaside. The ship like interior reminds me of the many family cruise ships I spent abroad the MSC liners while dining and enjoying some of the best Mediterranean specialties.

Den Anker is proud of it’s Belgian heritage and serves everything from everything from steamed Mussels to our their signature pepper steak fillets, crevettes and Belgian hot Chocolate…yum!

 

The interior is reminiscent of a typical sea side eatery. It’s large windows let’s this wintery day light stream in, while a roaring fire heats the intramural seating area. Large marble and wooden pillars stand tall between the tables and the bar is encased by a giant raft boat making this a gorgeous visual art piece upon entering the establishment. 

 

 

The menu is filled with Belgian favourites, however we had to try a few incredible nostalgic dishes. First up had to be the perfectly cooked “Os a moĆ«lle”or bone marrow to us South African’s, that we mopped up with soft bread rolls, and butter…no judgements here please! In life, everything is about balance so Brandon (the floor Manager) brought us a gorgeous new addition to the menu, the bamboo charcoal crusted prawns…yummm!

We then tucked into a large pot of steaming mussels with leeks and parsley that we enjoyed with the classic pomme frites (elongated french fries) and of course Belgian mayonnaise with a special house made mussel sauce.  

 

When last were you a tourist in your beautiful city? I have walked past Den Anker on numerous occasions and genuinely enjoyed the experience of lunching with one of my gal pals – Georgia over a large bowl of mussels as we cheers to yet another seafood pot shared between friends, we do have incredible “foodie moments.”
